Hello, I am looking for information on green sand. I live in an area where there are a lot of oil wells & lakes. (northern michigan)
There is a lovely little lake in my county (antrim) called Sand Lake. It is a lovely little lake but not many people swim there. I love it because it is quiet & peaceful. But I noticed that the sand all around the edge of the lake is now green. Not the surface sand, but if walk across the damp part of the edge, your footprints reveal green moist sand. Even animal tracks are all green.... If you write your name in the sand, it is green. This is new I think... I just never noticed this before. What has me worried is that this lake is surrounded by oil wells. There has always been a lot of silt in this lake, but I never noticed green sand. I read online the 2 lakes in the world have green sand, 1 in Guam & another in Hawii I think it was. Anyway the reason for the green sand was something called olivine. But this is a little lake in northern michigan surrounded by oil wells. Does anyone know if oil wells could have this effect on beach sand?
