ILLEGAL LOGGING REPORT - The NGO FERN (Forests and the European Union Resource Network) and the Royal Institute of International Affairs
(RIIA) have jointly produced a report on illegal logging, "Controlling imports of illegal timber: Options for Europe". The report sets out options the EU can take to control the import of illegal timber. This report is now also available in Spanish, French and German from the FERN
website: www.fern.org or in hard copy from Chantal Marijnissen, FERN, 20 Avenue des Celtes, B-1040 Brussels, Belgium. The translation was funded by the Forestry Research Programme, ZF0190.

ACCUGLOBE 2004 – From the Applied-GIS-RS list - Digital Data Technologies (DDTI) has released a new desktop GIS called AccuGlobe 2004. AccuGlobe 2004 contains many robust GIS features typically found in higher end products, such as feature editing, support for SHP and TAB files, charts, smart labeling, web updates and creating project files. The primary purpose of AccuGlobe is to provide a mapping platform for individuals and organizations that have previously been unable to use GIS software because of the expensive license fees. * GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP IN FOREST RESOURCE POLICY AND
ECONOMICS - The Department of Forestry in the College of Forest
Resources/Forest and Wildlife Research Center, Mississippi State
University, is offering a graduate research assistantship at the
Master's level in the area of forest resource policy and economics.
A Bachelor’s degree in forestry, economics, statistics, management,
political science, or other related disciplines is required.
Applicants should have academic research and/or experience in some
aspects of forestry/law/economics. Solid communication,
quantitative and analytic skills, and ability to conduct research
with a high level of independence are highly desirable. Specific
research area depends largely on each applicant's
background/interest. The successful applicants may do research in
one of the following areas: (1) assessing the evolution and growth
of forest products industry; (2) evaluating and preventing the
spread of invasive species in forests; and (3) examining the risk
and liability associated with alternative wildlife and fisheries
based enterprises. The annual stipend level currently is $12,000 at
the Master’s level with a tuition waiver. Applicants should submit

* ELEVEN PHD-STUDENTS WANTED FOR AN ELITE TEAM - Your background may
be biologist, master of science in forestry, chemist, physician,
mathematician, biotechnician etc. The research school in Forest
Genetics and Breeding looks for eleven post-graduate students who
will develop the forest genetic research in Sweden. Genetic forest
tree breeding has a long tradition in Sweden. Now we will increase
the breeding rate by combining traditional genetics, molecular
genetics and practical breeding in a world unique investment. The
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is forming a new
research school in cooperation with the forest industry and the
Forestry Research Institute of Sweden. The study time is five
years, from which 20 percent will be at the company where you, as a
post graduate student, will be employed. The intention is to
increase contacts and exchange of competence between the university
and industry. An excellent possibility to develop long-term
