1. NEW PAGE HIGHLIGHT: "HIV/AIDS Education Honors?and Protects?Indigenous Cultural Traditions." Cultural barriers in indigenous communities in addressing HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are creating particular--and growing--health problems among native peoples worldwide, often endangering an entire generation of culture-bearers particularly women and children. To meet this challenge, the Australian Federation of AIDS Organizations has developed a cultural awareness AIDS training package for Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, using images and languages from those communities for health education. Other HIV/AIDS programs for Native Americans have developed similar culturally aware training packages. 2. CROSS-TOPIC SPECIAL: HIV/AIDS: The Social and Economic Impact of an Epidemic. Worldwide, more than 28 million people have died from HIV/AIDS since it was first diagnosed in the early 1980s. Current statistics, however, do not reveal the broader social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS. The new Gateway Cross-Topic Special "HIV/AIDS: The Social and Economic Impact of a Pandemic," coinciding with World AIDS Day on December 1, looks at the epidemic through the perspective of 12 topic pages. Resources about diminished workforce, reduced household income, strained government health budgets, and weakened healthcare delivery systems are presented as well as those about the disease's impact on vulnerable groups such as orphans, farmworkers, women, youth, and people living in post-conflict societies. Salvator Niyonzima, UNAIDS Advisor for the Greater Involvement of People Living with or affected by HIV and AIDS (GIPA), defines HIV-related stigma and its manifestations, proposing actions to address it.
