Volunteers are an underutilized resource ? a resource that can be of great use in bridging the Digital Divide. Volunteering can be a wonderful experience for people with ICT skills. UN Volunteers and especially the UN Information Technology Service provide a valuable service to those seeking volunteers and those seeking help in volunteering. Volunteering opportunities provided by organizations such as NetAid and VITA allow you to volunteer from without leaving your home or office, and can require very little of your time. There are many member organizations of the Association for Progressive Communication where you can volunteer. GeekCorps (and its parent organization, the IESC) provides longer term ICT volunteering opportunities. Many countries have volunteer agencies involved in international development, providing government financed volunteers for multi-year assignments, and most of these can provide ICT volunteers and volunteering opportunities. VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) is the NGO in the field of voluntary services, but there are a host of agencies in specialized fields.
We invite you to volunteer by contributing to our ICT for Development community and its resource base!
We have prepared a special feature about the role volunteers can play in the area of ICT for Development:
